2 | Digital Divide by region | m015_0102.mp4 |
MOOCs are a type of large-scale online course that radically contribute to enhancing opportunities for higher education around the world. However, the MOOC movement has some potential issues that are associated with Digital Divide. The figure on the left is the rate of Internet users by regions and on the right is PC ownership by region. There are also large regional differences.

For example, in North America, 88% of the population uses the Internet, but in Africa, only 27% of the population uses it. In addition, we see that the ownership rate was over 100% in North America, but only 6% in the Middle East and Africa.
|
3 | A Potential Value of E-book | m015_0103.mp4 |
We focused on a potential value of e-book for online education to overcome Digital Divide in developing countries. E-books inherit some good points seen in traditional books, such as flipping pages, the visibility of per-page design and its convenience. Many e-book reader apps are available for many devices like smart phones, tablet devices and also PCs. Not necessary to always be on the internet except while downloading the e-books. E-books can perfectly compile all the learning resources.
|
4 | CHiLO | m015_0104.mp4 |
Our product, CHiLO, which stands for Creative Higher Education with Learning Object, is based on e-textbooks. CHiLO consists of four components as follows:

The CHiLO Book is provided the EPUB3 format. This is device independent and convenient for learners who want to study offline. However, the main challenge with the EPUB3 format is that most e-book readers do not currently support media-rich functions, such as embedded videos, JavaScript and JSON. To solve this problem, the CHiLO Book is also provided HTML5 format. This is very convenient for learners who have constant access to the Internet.
|
5 | The Appearance of a CHiLO | m015_0105.mp4 |
This slide shows an example of CHiLO Book. CHiLO Books have a short lecture video embedded inside. When you pass the assessment test, a badge is issued. When the learner collects all the badges of the course, a completion badge is issued. CHiLO Books can also be linked to SNSs. In these learning communities, learners can discuss the content presented in the CHiLO Book.
|
6 | Experimental Methodology | m015_0106.mp4 |
We conducted a pilot study of CHiLO with the Open University of Japan or OUJ as an OUJ MOOC. We produced a CHiLO Book series called "Nihongo Starter A1" for people learning Japanese. The pilot study lasted 1 year starting from April 2014. We provided CHiLO Books in both EPUB3 and HTML5 formats free of charge from OUJ-MOOC, iBooks Store, and Google Play Books. We also created learning communities on Facebook.
|
7 | Number of CHiLO Books Downloaded | m015_0107.mp4 |
This chart shows the number of downloads in 1 year. Even though we did not advertise the books, 22,128 copies have been downloaded in 103 countries.
|
8 | Downloads by Country | m015_0108.mp4 |
This slide shows the number of CHiLO Books downloaded by each country. Note that many CHiLO Books have been downloaded in developing countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Mexico, Malaysia, and Colombia.
|
9 | Survey of users | m015_0109.mp4 |
We conducted a survey of those who got badges during the pilot study. According to answers, to the question "Did you use an EPUB3 or HTML5 format CHiLO Book?"

About 12% of the respondents said "Mainly EPUB3, sometimes HTML5 format", 6% said "Both EPUB3 and HTML5 format at the same rate", and 16% said "Mainly HTML5, sometimes EPUB3 format." Therefore, about 34% of the respondents replied that they used both the HTML5 and EPUB3 format CHiLO Books.
|
10 | Respondent's comment | m015_0110.mp4 |
The following is quoted from one respondent commented. "I used both types depending on where I was and how long I had. I used the EPUB3 type to review the contents when I was in the office or elsewhere and the HTML5 type when I was at home and could work more peacefully."
|
11 | Learning Community | m015_0111.mp4 |
This shows an example of the Facebook learning community. Many learners posted that they were happy with the community and showed off the badges they achieved. Learners who had completed the series tended to provide helpful suggestions to the participants following them.

Additionally, Spanish-speaking learners translated the CHiLO Books into Spanish and volunteered to form a learning group.
|
12 | Experimental Results | m015_0112.mp4 |
As far as the issue of the geographical digital divide is concerned, CHiLO can offer affordable formats for people in many countries, including those in developing countries.

Additionally, learners can select HTML5 or EPUB3 format CHiLO Books to use on their PCs or mobile devices depending on their preferences and lifestyle.

Finally, we observed an interesting situation:

A kind of mutual learning occurred in the learning community. |
